WASHINGTON – Donald Trump remains the top choice of the largest group of Republican and Republican-leaning voters in the race for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination and 42 percent of those voters expect him to be the party’s nominee, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday.
The survey, which was carried out Oct. 15-18 in English and Spanish among a random national sample of 1,001 adults, shows the billionaire developer leading the crowded Republican field with 32 percent, down slightly from 33 percent last month.
His closest competitor, neurosurgeon Ben Carson, stands at 22 percent and only one other candidate, Sen. Marco Rubio, is in double-digits, with support from 10 percent of Republican-minded voters who took part in the poll, which has a margin of error of plus/minus 3.5 percent.
Trump is seen as the strongest leader by 47 percent of respondents who identify themselves as Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, while only 12 percent expressed that sentiment about the early favorite in the race, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
The real estate tycoon has spent nearly 100 days at the top of the polls tracking the contest for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
The GOP hopefuls are scheduled to hold their third debate next week.
