The president attempted to reassure Americans in a speech to the nation last night following the attack by radical Islamic terrorists last week in San Bernardino, California. We’ll let you know what voters think of the president’s response to the San Bernardino murders later this week.

Sixty percent (60%) of voters think the United States is at war with radical Islamic terrorism.

The president argued as much for gun control as he did for increased vigilance against terrorists. But Americans have said in the past that more focus on the mentally ill is a better way to stop mass shootings than increased gun control. Here’s how voters felt about gun control before the recent horrific events in California and Colorado.

Most Americans say the Black Friday shooting incident at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado was the act of a mentally ill person and was not a terrorist act.

Some have argued that the increased presence of Americans with concealed carry gun permits could make a difference in some of these mass shooting situations. We’ll see what Americans have to say about that at 10:30 a.m. Eastern today.

Americans are also more convinced than ever that media coverage of these shootings inspires copycat killers.

Following the terrorist attack last week, belief that Donald Trump will be the 2016 Republican presidential nominee is up among both GOP voters and likely voters in general.

Not surprisingly, in the midst of the holiday shopping frenzy, consumers are already saying they’re ready to give their credit cards and bank accounts a break next month, according to our latest Rasmussen Reports Consumer Spending Report.

Some readers wonder how we come up with our job approval ratings for the president since they often don’t show as dramatic a change as some other pollsters do. It depends on how you ask the question and whom you ask.

To get a sense of longer-term job approval trends for the president, Rasmussen Reports compiles our tracking data on a full month-by-month basis.

Rasmussen Reports has been a pioneer in the use of automated telephone polling techniques, but many other firms still utilize their own operator-assisted technology (see methodology).

Daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. To reach those who have abandoned traditional landline telephones, Rasmussen Reports uses an online survey tool to interview randomly selected participants from a demographically diverse panel. The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 1,500 Likely Voters is +/- 2.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Results are also compiled on a full-week basis and crosstabs for full-week results are available for Platinum Members.
